Personal Opinion/Review #11: The Rest of Us Just Live Here By Patrick Ness

The Rest of Us Just Live Here

Okay let me just start by saying THE COVER GLOWS IN THE DARK!!!!!! okay so this was not informed to me by the sales rep who recommended this read to me. I mean she had be convinced at book that tells the story of the normal behind the scenes people in all those supernaturally character focus stories, but I might have picked this up way earlier if she had just mentioned the glow in the dark cover.

Goodreads Synopsis:

A new YA novel from novelist Patrick Ness, author of the Carnegie Medal- and Kate Greenaway Medal-winning A Monster Calls and the critically acclaimed Chaos Walking trilogy, The Rest of Us Just Live Here is a bold and irreverent novel that powerfully reminds us that there are many different types of remarkable.

What if you aren’t the Chosen One? The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death?

What if you’re like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again.

Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life.

Even if your best friend is worshipped by mountain lions.

So like I mentioned above this book tells the simple story of the normals living in the background of the stories usually told about the indies (supernatural people) saving the world. I love the way that Ness tells the story; we still get small blurbs of the supernatural story and the main story revolves around the normals just living. There are points throughout the book where I feel that there are lulls and others where I just feel like screaming at the characters to stop being so silly. This book does however deal with many mental health issues in multiple characters as well as having a LBGTQ aspect, with every character bring something new to the story. There is so much information and genres crammed into this small quick read, that if you aren’t sure if you might like it that there are others to latch onto throughout the story.

Rating: 4/5
